Description
Thattu Dosa is a traditional South Indian tiffin item, particularly popular in Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu, known for its soft, spongy texture and thick, pancake-like shape. The name “thattu” refers to the flat griddle or “plate” on which it is cooked and served, often at roadside eateries and small tea shops.
Made from fermented rice and urad dal batter, Thattu Dosa is thicker and smaller in diameter than regular dosa. It is typically served with coconut chutney, tomato chutney, or spicy red chili garlic chutney, and often accompanied by a side of vegetable curry or sambar. Its simplicity and comforting flavor make it a common part of breakfast and evening meals.
This dosa holds nostalgic value for many across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and remains a staple among street food offerings in cities like Kochi, Madurai, and in diaspora communities across Brampton, Edmonton, and Winnipeg.
