Description
Chicken Kondattam is a spicy and crispy South Indian-style fried chicken dish that originated in Kerala, known for its bold flavor, crunchy texture, and fiery red masala. The word kondattam means “celebration” in Malayalam, and the dish is often prepared for special occasions, parties, and festive meals.
Boneless or bone-in chicken is first marinated with chili powder, turmeric, crushed pepper, and vinegar, then deep-fried until golden and crisp. The fried chicken is then tossed in a semi-dry masala made with sautéed garlic, green chilies, curry leaves, and a thick, red chili-tamarind paste. A final tempering of mustard seeds and coconut oil adds fragrance and authenticity.
Chicken Kondattam is typically served as a dry starter or a side with Kerala parotta or rice and is especially popular in Christian and Muslim homes across Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur, as well as among Malayali communities in Mississauga, Scarborough, and Calgary.
