Description
Chana Masala is a classic North Indian curry made with chickpeas simmered in a spiced onion-tomato gravy. Known for its rich flavor and protein content, this dish is a staple in Punjabi households and has also become a popular vegetarian choice across South Indian cities and restaurants.
The dish is made using boiled white chickpeas (kabuli chana) cooked in a base of sautéed onions, tomatoes, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. A special spice blend including cumin, coriander, turmeric, amchur (dry mango powder), and garam masala gives the curry its bold, tangy flavor. Some South Indian versions also add curry leaves and coconut oil for a regional twist.
Chana Masala is typically served with chapati, poori, bhatura, or rice, and continues to be a go-to comfort meal across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi, as well as among Indian families in Mississauga, Brampton, and Surrey.
